Reign of the Champions…!!!

Though the summer was filled with high octane action with many major sport events taking place, the “FIFA world cup” this year will top the charts among them. The 20th edition of world cup was hosted by Brazil for the second time in the history of the tournament and fourth time on the South American soil. Despite all the expectations, the dominant champion of last season Spain saw an early exit in the first stage itself from the tournament breaking many in a hearts. The host nation made it to the semis but saw a crushing defeat from the new champions “Germany” by 1-7 to leave behind a major scar.Argentina despite being the favorites in the final could not beat the spirit of the Germans who bagged the trophy after 24 years and for the fourth time brought it to their home nation.

The next spotlight of this summer was the “Commonwealth Games” held at “Glasgow, Scotland”. The event extended over duration of 12 days from “23rd July- 3rd Aug”. England improving on the medals tally this season topped the table with 174 medals (including 58 gold) as compared to last season’s third position at 142 medals (including 37 gold). India had a disastrous season this year with just 64 medals (including 15 gold) as compared to last season’s second ranked tally of 101 medals (including 38 gold). India finished fifth in the table next to the host nation Scotland.

Other major event this summer was the “2014 Wimbledon Championships”which took place at the “All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom”, from “23rd June to 6th July 2014”. Number one seed “Novak Djokovic” won the men’s singles title defeating “Roger Federer” with 6–7, 6–4, 7–6, 5–7, 6–4 while sixth seed “Petra Kvitová” defeated “Eugenie Bouchard” in straight sets 6–3, 6–0 to lift the Women’s singles title. Other attractions of this season included “F1 Canadian Grand Prix”held on 8th June at the “Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, Canada” and was won by “Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull-Renault”; “F1 Austrian Grand Prix”held on 22nd June at the “Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, Austria” and was won by “Nico Rosberg of Mercedes”;“F1 British Grand Prix” held on 6th July at the “Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, United Kingdom” and was won by“Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes”;“F1 German Grand Prix” held on 20th July at the “Hockenheimring,Hockenheim, Germany” and was won by “Nico Rosberg of Mercedes” and “F1 Hungarian Grand Prix” held on 27th July at the “Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Hungary” and was won by “Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull-Renault”.
